Friends working on their February self-portraits.

Josh told the Cardinals that in honor of our Philadelphia Eagles playing in the Super Bowl, we were going to work with footballs and practice our throwing. Friends also had the choice of working with the sticky ball to practice throwing and catching as well. Ask your Cardinal who they practiced catching and throwing with.
Last week the Cardinals worked on a journal entry titled, How would you design an airplane? The Cardinals were very creative with adding many amazing details to their designs. Great work, Cardinals!
Tuesday
During Spanish class with Alicia, the Cardinals worked on making and extending patterns. Friends worked individually, and in groups of two or three. After the creations were finished, the Cardinals, with Alicia's assistance, explained their patterns by saying the colors they used in Spanish and counted how many cubes they used all in Spanish.
Great work, Cardinals!!
Alicia made coloring books of the many items of clothing we have learned about for each Cardinal. The Cardinals brought home their books today!
Our Personas (Persons) from Spanish class are finished and now on display!
The Cardinals made their very own African place mats today. Friends chose from African colors and decided how to design their placemat by weaving their chosen paper. Each Cardinal wove strips of colorful paper together to create patterns similar to those seen in traditional African mats. Each color represents something different. The color red represents strength, yellow for the sun, green is for the land and black for pride in the color of skin.
Wednesday
Today in meeting for worship, we settled into silence with our second grade buddies, followed by Andrea reading the book called, Everything in it's Place. We then we settled back into silence again. At the end of our time in the meetinghouse, we broke the silence by singing the song, Little Wheel Turning with Keisha before heading back to lower school.
The Cardinals drew on paper, then with a teacher's help folded the paper and used a scissor to cut out triangles or any shapes that friends wanted to create. The skill of cutting with a scissor is another way to help develop fine motor skills. These skills are also important in accomplishing writing skills.
We made snow people last week and this week after they were displayed. We asked each Cardinal, "What would you do with your snow person?" Here is what friends had to say:
Ekin - I would play family and eat and sleep.
Riley - I would pretend to go for a walk and talk to snow baby girl.
Jackson - I would kick the ball and play soccer and play football and throw the ball.
Adam - I would take him for a walk and play in the water.
Lily - I would play Hungry Hippo with it and eat some snowflakes.
Phoenix - We would eat the snow and I would hug him.
Cooper - I play catch with him and play Jack with him.
Angeline - Take it to the playground and play on the swings and slide.
Oz - I would play with him at my house and take it to New York City.
Hayden - I would take care of it by hugging it and being nice to it.
Shanga - I would play snowman and build with it.
Blaise - I would play football with him and soccer and hockey.
James - I would be a nice friend and I would run really fast.
Sidney - I would take it home and give it to my mommy and daddy.
We are hoping for some real snow soon!
Thursday
Music class was fun with lots of movement and singing!
Oz brought in a sample cut out of an Eagle bird. The Cardinals decorated wings for their Eagle as the teachers cut out and put together the Eagles crowns in support of the Philadelphia Eagles playing in the super bowl on Sunday! The Cardinals then went around lower school and sang Fly, Eagles, Fly for any class that was available to listen. Many classes joined in and sang with us! Go Birds!!
We are looking forward to seeing and talking with you at Conferences tomorrow!
Have a wonderful weekend!
