On the way over to gym class it started to snow. The Cardinals were very excited and tried catching snowflakes on their tongues, some snowflakes landed in/on friend's eyes and on their faces. This made the Cardinals happy and giggled with such happiness.

Today we explored with hula hoops and balls in gym class. We pretended the hula hoops were igloos and the balls were snowballs. Friends stood on the blue line and the objective was to throw snowballs into the igloo. Friends throw far, close, high or low to accomplished this task. The next task was jumping from one lily pad to another lily pad (from one hula hoop to another). Followed by standing in a hula hoop and using it as a bumper car to gently bump another friend's hula hoop. What fun the Cardinals had. Ask your Cardinal what they liked most about gym class today.

These Geese were spotted on the soccer field in the snow outside the gym.

On the way back from the gym, we stopped by one of the upper school science rooms and took a look around.

Friends testing out the box that we will turn into an airplane!

Last week, we had a group discussion and asked each Cardinal, "What do you know about airplanes?" Here is what friends had to say:

Angeline - That it can fly. Everyone is in a line to get on the plane.

Cooper - They can fly and go in the sky.

James - They take off after they drive on the runway. The spyler slows down the plane when it lands on the ground.

Phoenix - They have little wheels in the front. When I was on a airplane it almost go into outer space cause it was so high in the sky. You need gum so your ears don't get pump up.

Adam - When the plane lands it goes fast then it goes really slow.

Sidney - They have wings and windows. I go to California and I sit at the window next to my sister.

Jackson - They have engines on the back. You see the clouds out the window.

Hayden - They have things inside that you can put your food on. They also have seats to sit on. You walk through a tunnel to get on the airplane.

Oz - You can watch movies on the airplane.

Riley - People sit and be calm on the airplane and they have potties too.

Shanga - A person drives the plane and it really big.

Ekin - They have wings and they go lots of planes. I go to Turkey on airplane.

Blaise - The passenger get food and when the plane takes off it's so bumpy. I fly in airplane before and you need a passport to go on the plane.

Lily - You can drive a airplane like Ema drive the car.

We then read the book Airplanes to gain further information. The teachers asked the Cardinals if they would like to make an airplane and the class cheered in unison. Teachers called around to local appliance stores and we were lucky to get a large refrigerator box from Jenkintown Electric store. The store even delivered the box to us, which we were thankful for.

Tuesday
In Spanish class, Alicia greeted us by asking how we were feeling. The Cardinals came up with a few words and Alicia translated for us. The Cardinals then repeated Alicia in Spanish. The words were Planets (planetas), human beings (ser humano), Truck (camión),  robot (robot), and Octobutt, which has no translation :). The Cardinals then engaged in reviewing some basic colors and playing a color bingo game, all in Spanish. Alicia called a color in Spanish and friends figured out the color and then placed a red chip on the color called. Today it was Cooper's turn to squeeze la vaca

Back in our classroom, we had morning meeting followed by snack time. We read the book, The life of a little CardBoard Box, had a conversation and asked each Cardinal, "How do you think we should make our airplane?" Our airplane making is starting to emerge! Friends had much to say:

Hayden - Roll some of the box to make a booster so it can go fast. We put it outside the airplane on the side. Put a steering wheel to drive and fly the plane.

Lily - We can cut out wheels and glue to the airplane. We can add little boxes for the pets.

Shanga - Make some windows.

Riley - Make seats for the driver, I mean the air pilot and for the passengers. Maybe we can use chairs, I mean the chair we have for snack. We make the flat so it doesn't wobble.

Adam - Make a square for a tank to put gas in.

Cooper - Use glue to put the pieces together.

Phoenix - Make little wheels to land the plane, we could make it with black paper. When the airplane flies the wheels can shut down at the bottom for take off.

Jackson - Make a cockpit where the pilot is, add window shields to push through the clouds. And put a pointy thing at the front, so it doesn't get stuck in the clouds.

Sidney - Put it next to the wall, to make it stable.

Angeline - We should have buttons to fly the plane and cut out big triangles for the wings.

Blaise - Put tape so there is no holes and put a sheet over the windows to open and close them. Put a box as a machine to put the suitcase through and a red light so if you can't take it on the plane. You throw it in the trash.

Ekin - Put lights so the plane could see the other planes and add the light outside. We need red and green lights. We just need red and green paper.

Oz - With a trunk for suitcases out of paper and make the thing above your head where you can put the suitcases.

Wow, what a busy Wednesday!!

The Cardinals have been learning the Spanish names for some articles of clothing over the past few months. Today, friends met with their second grade buddies in the art room to work on a Spanish project. The Cardinals decided how they wanted to dress their Persona and choose their clothing articles. With the Cardinals second grade buddies help, the Cardinals traced, cut, designed and glued their designed wardrobe onto their Persona. Great work friends! Ask your Cardinal what kind of clothing they dressed their Persona in?

Next, we walked over to the Meeting House with our second grade buddies and settled into silence for meeting for worship. We finished our silence by singing This Little Light of Mine with Keisha.

Back in our classroom, we ate snack and then engaged in a math workshop in which all activities were math related. Friends worked in small groups and rotated through activities. The activities were  number bingo, number puzzle, writing numbers in sand, working on simple math equations, thinking about and writing numbers as they were called out while using math manipulative to figure out what two numbers make up a number, for example 15, 10, 12. Erica, our lower school learning specialist, joined us for this workshop.

In art class we did drawing and painting all in the same day. Friends used wonder sticks to create their own designs. We then used a paint brush and water to paint over our designs. The Cardinals watched in awe as magic appeared on the paper. Ask your Cardinal what they created?

Thursday

We began music and movement class by dancing to Fatou Yo (I am Fatou) by Toure  Kunda from Putumayo World Playground. Followed by our hello song Jambo and the movements and singing of This little cow, Looby loo, Freight Train and This little light of mine. The Cardinals finished music class by singing our goodbye song. Ask your Cardinal to sing you our hello or goodbye song?

Today we worked on the beginning stage of creating our airplane. The Cardinals all got a chance to test out sitting in the base of our airplane. Ask your Cardinal what they think about the airplane so far?

Friday

Our second grade buddies joined us for our Friday Fun Games! It is so nice to see when these two groups of friends see each other in the hallways the many hugs that are shared! Today we gave our buddies letters that we gave dictation for or helped to write words! Our buddies also got to test out our developing airplane.

We had a surprise visit from Roo, our school mascot today.
