We started the day by completing our morning jobs, followed by working on a journal entry titled, "What is your favorite fruit?" and creating our own individual snow people.
We have not had library class in a while because of school being closed. Ashanti told the Cardinals she was very happy to see them and gave many hugs. She then read us the book, They All Saw A Cat. The book was about a day in the life of a cat and how other animals saw the cat. The Cardinals had many perspectives of the cat's journey and encounters. Then the Cardinals got to choose and checked out a book with Ashanti before taking it back to our classroom. Ask your Cardinal which book they choose?
Tuesday
Today in Spanish class, we continued our work of finishing up or starting our Persona. Alicia told the Cardinals she was amazed by the fantastic work each Cardinal did with their Persona with a little help from their second grade buddies. Today was Blaise's turn to squeeze la vaca!

Wednesday
Each first Wednesday of a new month, lower school students do not go over to the meeting house for meeting for worship. This time is used as community time with each grade and their lower school buddies. Today we had an assembly in the auditorium. The fourth graders led us in our hello song and movement followed by a present for Black history which is celebrated all year long. We learned about some of the many people who have made important contributions to our world!
The hello song and movement.
Mary Mcleod Bethune was a civil rights activist.
Barack Obama was the first African-American president
Notable African-American
Benjamin Banneker was a scientist and astronomer. He created a clock made entirely of wood.
Dr. Jackson was one of the first African-American women to get a Doctorate in physics and helped create the fax machine, touch tone phones, caller id, and voice mail.
Dr. Kizzmekia created the first Covid-19 vaccine.
A trivia game about famous African-Americans!
We sang along with Keisha as she sang, Sing when the spirit says sing.
Way to go Cardinals!!
Back in the classroom, we worked more on our airplane. Today the Cardinals talked as a group and decided on what shape windows to add to our plane. Friends voted between a circle or a semicircle with a flap. After voting we came up with 5 friends wanting circle windows, while 9 friends wanted semicircle windows that could open and close and so our airplane has semicircle windows. We also added a door. The Cardinals each made a prediction as to how many windows, we could make on our airplane and why they gave that number. Here are the predictions:
Ekin - 4 we only need 4
Hayden - 11 cause it's a big box
Phoenix - 6 that's a good number
Adam - 14 cause real airplanes have lots of window
Shanga - 20 cause we need them
Cooper - 16 so we can look outside
Blaise - 9 because 9 is not so many and we can share
Angeline - 12 cause we have lots of Cardinal friends
Riley - 5 cause the passenger need windows
Jackson - 46 so we can see outside and we need a door
Oz -1 so the pilot can drive the plane
Lily - 10 in my car we have windows so we need some for the airplane.
Sidney - 6 to see the clouds
James - 4 cause you can look out
Thursday
The Cardinals learned how to say the new month of febrero and continued to practice using the Spanish Hundred Chart to count. We have been in school for 89 (ochenta y nueve) days so far. Alicia read us the book called Sparkle Boy, The book talked about standing up for yourself and what makes you happy. Another key point in the book was that it is not okay for anyone to tell another person how to feel, act or be. These are all great lessons to start to learn from a young age. We all need to respect each other and this also starts from young. Always being true to yourself is the key to being an individual. The Cardinals had many thoughtful comments during this read aloud and at the end of the book. Today it was Ekin's turn to squeeze la vaca! Ask your Cardinal what they like about the book?
The Cardinals worked with texture in art class with Amanda. Friends used sticky contact paper to create with many different textures such as beads, buttons, yarn, feathers, shiny objects, and different types and sizes of paper.
Airplane and kitchen area fun!
Friday
Our lower school assembly this morning was fun. We learned about the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania. And the story of how the tapping of maple trees started.
Afterward the Cardinals were off to music class with Keisha, We started class by dancing to Mardi Gras Mambo by Buckwheat from Putumayo World Playground recording. Keisha played the guitar and the Cardinal led by singing our hello song Jambo. We then sang and did the movement for These are grandma's glasses and these are grandpa's glasses. After singing, the Cardinals worked to find out who had the high voice and who had the low voice. Keisha then gave out scarves and we pretended they were articles of clothing for cold weather as Keisha played her guitar and sang the song Snowing. The Cardinals then used the scarves to pretend to make popcorn.
Back in our classroom, we ate snack, read books aloud and soon it was time for Jenna. Jenna, who is Oz's mom, came in to celebrate Shabbat with us. Jenna told us that Shabbat is a Jewish tradition that takes place at the end of each week on Fridays after sunset and lasts until the following day after sunset. She lit two candles and sang the Shabbat prayers. Jenna brought in homemade challah that she baked for us and we had grape juice with it, as Jewish people do. Jenna told us some suggestions for Shabbat are: Avoid technology, connect with loved ones, nurture your health, get outside, avoid commerce, light candles, drink wine, eat bread, find silence and give back. Jenna taught us a kids blessing that is said during Shabbat for children: May you be blessed and guarded
May you know favor and grace
May you give and receive kindness and peace
Thank you, Oz for sharing your mom with us! Thank you, Jenna, for coming in and sharing your tradition and culture!

The Cardinals joined the Sparrow and Catbirds for an impromptu dance party in the auditorium on the stage. What a fun way to end our week!!
Have a wonderful weekend!
