Last Friday on Field Day, our Home and School team provided water ice to all AFS students. The Cardinals kept their water ice because we did not have enough time to eat them. And so today, Monday the Cardinals got to eat their water ice with plenty of time to enjoy it!

Having fun in gym class was the name of the game. We began with each Cardinal getting a ball. The objective was to toss the ball low and catch it then increase the height of tossing a little at a time. The next objective was to toss the ball up, let it bounce once and then catch it or bounce it as hard as you can on the floor and then catch it. Josh explained what dribbling was and how to kick the ball with your foot. Then it was the Cardinals turn to test the skill, followed by the Cardinals choosing a skill or skills they wanted to practice more. During this time Josh and Lisa went around and interact with each Cardinals and the skill they chose!

Tuesday

After counting in Spanish, where the Cardinals are getting really good at pronouncing each number, Alicia told the Cardinals they were doing so awesome with singing and doing the movements to Head-n- Shoulder. That she thinks the Cardinals should preform it for the whole lower school in an assembly soon!  We began to learn another song with Alicia called Mi Cuerpo (My body).  The Cardinals did Canima (Walk) where they walked around the classroom and then Alicia says para (stop). Alicia then called out a word in the song Head-n-Shoulder, in Spanish, and the Cardinals had to point to that part on their body. The Cardinals were amazing!   Today it was James's turn to squeezed la vaca!

Wednesday

Amanda told us that the artwork we create today will be displayed in a museum (more details below). Amanda also told us that at the end of the display time, our artwork will be wrapped and given to people who are sick or not able a get around. Amanda then asked the Cardinals how they feel the people would feel. Some of the ideas from the Cardinals were happy, feel better, smile, fill their buckets like in our class, say thank you, and love them! Amanda then showed us a picture by the artist Joaquin Torres-Garcia. The picture was made up of many different shapes. After a conversation about what the Cardinals saw in the picture. It was time for friends to create their very own masterpieces. We used different color papers, shapes of paper and glue.

Here's some information from Amanda:

All of our Early Childhood, Kindergarten and 1st grade students will have artwork featured in the upcoming Kids Care 29 show at the Woodmere Art Museum, an annual project in which students give artworks as holiday gifts for people in need. Kids Care is a collaboration between the museum and MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance). The students' artwork will be on display in the Helen Millard Children's Gallery before being wrapped and delivered with a holiday meal to individuals battling illnesses.

This year, the Kids Care exhibition will be on display from November 12- December 18. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, December 10 from 1-3 pm, in which students and their family and friends can come celebrate their artwork. If you have any questions please contact Amanda at amilz@abingtonfriends.net

Ask your Cardinal which masterpiece is theirs!

Thursday

We got our bodies moving in music class with Keisha. The Cardinals sang and did movements to songs such as Good Feeling, Jambo, Shake and Stop, Cobbler and Washy Washy!

The Cardinals taking a closer look at the scarecrows created by Lower school students in Kindergarten through fourth grades.

Friday

Today we did our first cooking activity of the school year.  We made our special banana bread! Our Cardinals from last year as well as our new Cardinals were very eager to participate in the process of making banana bread! We divided into two groups and together we made five loaves of banana bread! Friends measured ingredients, peeled and mashed bananas, grease pans, mixed and stir the batter then into the oven it went! And out came our delicious looking and smelling banana bread! Many Cardinals had two servings! Each Cardinal got a slice of banana bread to bring home. We also shared our banana bread with Andrea, Tricia and most of the teachers in lower school. Ask your Cardinal what part of making the banana bread they did and how did it taste?
