The first graders are presently studying Heroes. Each student chose a hero and along with their study, they made that person into a stamp for their post office part of their hero's museum. Early this morning, some Cardinals and a teacher went to buy some stamps. Each stamp cost 10 cents. At the end of their study, first graders will count the money and donate it to an organization of their choosing! The stamps the Cardinals bought were used to begin the process of giving dictation or receiving help to write letters to friends/people of their choosing in school. Stay Tuned!
Tuesday
As we walked into Spanish class, Alicia counted each Cardinal in Spanish. Friends either knew the number in Spanish and said it on their own or Alicia helped them and they repeated after her. Great work Cardinal!! The Cardinals took a look at different buildings/houses to identify shapes around us and around the world on the smart board. As friends pointed to a shape, they called the shapes in Spanish. Today it was Lily's turn to squeezed la vaca!
We continued our work from yesterday by writing our letters. We set up four stations such as two writing tables, magnatiles, snail pace game and duplos. Friends rotated in these stations as teachers continued to help with writing letters. Each Cardinal chose a stamp and placed it on their letter. Soon, it was time to take our letters to the first grade mailbox and off our letters will go to our buddies, friends, or siblings.
Wednesday
What a busy morning the Cardinals had, first we started working on a journal entry titled, "What do you like to build with and why?
Thursday
The Cardinals had a group discussion in which we talked about and voted on the color and name for our airplane. The choice of colors were blue and orange, 12 friends voted for the color blue, while one friends voted for orange. One friend suggested that we put orange strips on our plane, so the one friend wouldn't be sad! And so our airplane will be blue with orange stripes!
The Cardinal were asked, "What Airline should we call our airplane? Here is what each Cardinal taught we should name our airplane.
Angeline - Spirit Airline
Oz - Black Panther Airline
Ekin - Turkish Airline
Cooper - Cardinal Airline
Riley - Big Jet Airline
Lily - Cotton Candy Airline
Shanga - Cardinal's Airline
Jackson - Blue Airline
Phoenix - Cotton Airline
Blaise - American Airline
Hayden - Prime Airline
Sidney - Cardinal's Airline
Adam - Star Airline
After each friend gave a suggested name for our airplane, we voted to decide on a name. We went through all the names aloud and saw that two friends said Cardinal Airline and two friends said Cotton as part of or the full name for their airline. We continued our discussion by bringing this to the Cardinal's attention. After a conversation about why we were voting on the two above names, 10 friends voted for the name Cardinal's Airline and 3 friends voted for Cotton Airline. A friend said, "I know, we can do both names like the blue and orange paint? And so we voted again, and all the Cardinals voted to call our airplane Cardinal's Cotton Airline! This process of voting was most impressive as it unfold and to hear the Cardinals openly sharing their opinions and understanding of fairness!
Friday
Cardinal's Dance Party
We bought a window well and got it cut to fit the window part of our airplane's cockpit. The Cardinals glued many different types, sizes, colors and shapes caps to simulate the mechanical part of the cockpit. Today, Adam's Papa (Stephen) came in, framed out the cockpit and helped us attach our airplane's cockpit. Thank you, Adam, for sharing your Papa with us! Stephen, thank you for taking the time to help us create our airplane, it was very much appreciated!
