In Spanish class, Alicia reviewed the names of the clothing we have been learning about. Next Wednesday, 1/25/23, along with our second grade buddies, the Cardinals will be working on their individual "Identity Persona Project". A couple weeks ago, the Cardinals chose the paint that comes closest to their skin tone and painted their Persona (Person). Next Wednesday, the Cardinals will dress their "Identity Persona". Alicia did a show-n-tell of what the project will look like. Stay Tuned! Today it was James's turn to squeezed la vaca.
As we walked into the gym, Josh had an obstacle course set up for us. Josh said today that we are working on our balancing skills. Friends worked with hula hoops, two different kinds of balance beams, walking steppers and buckets. The Cardinals pretended that alligators were on the ground in order to try to maintain their balance. Ask your Cardinal which balancing activity or activities they liked best? Toward the end of our gym time, Josh lowered a couple basketball hoops because basketball is one of the Cardinals favorite things to do in the gym!
The Cardinals are showing great interest in many topics such as lions, cats, seahorses, how fast cars go, airplanes, cooking, building, monkeys, tigers and sea lions. We got books on these topics from the library to help us dig deeper to gain more knowledge and to see which direction we should go in our exploration. Stay tuned!
Wednesday
The Cardinals met their second grade buddies outside their classroom before walking over to the meeting house for Meeting for Worship. We sat together and settled into silence. After our silence, we sang This Little Light of Mine. On our way back to lower school, two friends were overheard asking their buddies, "Are you coming to our classroom?"
Back in our classroom, the Cardinals ate snack before engaging in a team building activity. The teachers put two pieces of red, blue, purple, orange, green and three yellow papers in a bag. We asked each Cardinal to pick a color without looking in the bag and to hold it behind their backs until all friends had a paper. Friends then showed and paired up by paper color and worked in groups of two to create one masterpiece.

Friends worked with different building materials such as squigz, crystal connectors, designer blocks, plastic cups, unifix cubes, magnatiles and gear connectors. The Cardinals were given 25 minutes to work together and then another 5 minutes to come up with a name for their masterpiece. The Cardinals worked through negotiations, conflicts, perseverance, team work, compromising. At the end of our allotted time, we all gather back on our morning meeting rug. We talked about being respectful of each other's work as we went to observe each masterpiece.
Each pair of friends gave their presentation on their masterpiece, while the rest of the Cardinals looked and listened. At the end of each presentation, we applauded for our friends and their amazing work. Ask your Cardinal about their creation.
Here is what friends named their masterpieces and had to say as we visited their work areas:

The book and colors connect to many of the things in our environment such as apple - La manzana (rojo), the sun - el sol (amarillo), fish - el pez (azul), frog - la rana (verde), snail - el caracol (morado), flower - la flor (anaranjado), Ice cream - el helado (Cafe), snowflake - el copo de nieve (blanco), and bird - el cuervo (negro). Today it was Hayden's turn to squeezed la vaca!
In art class with Amanda, we began our work of making a creation with clay. Amanda told us we are going to be making a coil bowl. She showed us how to tap the clay to make a flat base for our bowl. Then Amanda showed us how to take a small piece of clay and roll it between the palms of our hands to make a snake. Followed by showing us how to wrap the snake around the base of our bowl to start building our bowl. Then it was each Cardinal's turn to make their own clay bowls. Amanda told us that at the end of class, our clay bowls will go on the drying rack to dry. Stay tuned for our next steps!
Friday
Music with Keisha began with the Cardinals dancing and moving to the song Get Yo Body Movin'. We acted out the book, Over in the Meadow, but first Keisha went through all the actions. Friends hid, jumped, pretended to eat, make noise, buzzed and flew, made noise like pigs, swam, quacked and slept. Keisha then sang the words of the book. The Cardinals joined her with some of the singing, counting and all of the movements. Nice work, Cardinals! We had fun singing and doing movements to Head Shoulder, Knee and Toes, 1, 2, 3.
The Cardinals working on letters for their second grade buddies!
After working on our letters, we did not have enough time to fully engage in our normal Friday Fun Board Games. And so we decide to play Twister, which allowed us all to participate! What fun we had!
Enjoy your weekend!
